The Smith Foundation was founded by Michael Smith, the beloved grandson of Clarence C. Smith — affectionately known to family and friends as “Pop Pop.” More than a grandfather, Pop Pop was Michael’s father figure, mentor, and greatest source of inspiration. A man of remarkable strength, humility, and compassion, Clarence rose from humble beginnings to build a successful small business, serve his community for more than 30 years as a school bus driver, and touch countless lives through his generosity and character. Whether opening his heart to those in need or lighting up his home each Christmas for the entire community to enjoy, Pop Pop lived a life rooted in service, love, and giving back. His example continues to motivate Michael every single day.

Following Clarence’s passing in 2005, Michael Smith created The Smith Foundation to honor his grandfather’s legacy and carry forward the values that defined him. Inspired by Pop Pop’s unwavering belief in hard work, kindness, and community, the foundation exists to uplift underserved families, create opportunities for those facing hardship, and make a lasting impact through compassion and service. What began as a tribute to a remarkable man has grown into a mission dedicated to changing lives — ensuring that Clarence “Pop Pop” Smith’s spirit of generosity continues to inspire future generations.

The Smith Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth, supporting seniors, and strengthening communities throughout Southern Maryland and beyond. Founded on the belief that every individual deserves guidance, opportunity, and hope, the foundation provides mentoring programs that help young people build self-confidence, develop life skills, and realize their full potential. By partnering with schools, community organizations, and local support systems, The Smith Foundation creates a caring and inclusive environment where youth are encouraged to grow into responsible, confident, and successful adults.
